At Internet Solutions (IS), we create a rewarding environment with numerous opportunities to grow the skills of our workforce.
Coupled with these opportunities are great employee perks such as connectivity benefits, canteen allowances and access to convenient amenities e.g. gym, mini-golf course, hairdressers - just some of the reasons our staff are dedicated to working for IS. We’re proud to showcase Sameer Cassim, Research and Development Systems Architect, for his long service and to find out why he dedicated his professional career to IS.
Where were you working before joining IS?
IS was my first entry to the work environment. I came straight out of university in Malaysia as a mechanical engineer and joined IS in March 2012.
What was your first job when you joined IS?
I had the opportunity to work in a position I had not heard of – as an energy engineer. The aim was to manage energy efficiencies and optimise power costs by using effective monitoring and billing solutions. I handle product development in the energy sector and provide efficient cooling for data centres, I also work as a business analyst for international operations, perform quality assurance and quality checks and am involved in change control and risk management.
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey at IS?
I started in the Cloud business unit and reported to a senior business development consultant. I grew every year and made my way to the data centre development team, then worked as a specialist consultant in the data centre operations team. I am now an R&D systems architect for data centres and report directly to the CTO. Being the primary expert and knowledge hub for the company’s data centres and infrastructure design best practice allows me to act as a trusted adviser to the business and operations on optimal designs involving data centre builds, upgrades, upliftments and strategies. I provide insights and guidance in terms of best practice and alignment to standards such as Uptime Institute/TIA 942, ASHRAE, ISO27001 and SOC2. I understand market trends and the latest technologies and consistently build and expand relationships with vendors, consultants and developers.
What has been the main highlight in your time at IS? (If you have more than one, feel free to mention them)?
The ability to grow every year in my career from position to position. I’ve had the opportunity to fly abroad to gain leadership skills (as part of the Fast Track Forum) and developing key relationships with vendors and our holding company, NTT. I am also grateful for having gained direct interactions and engagements with the CEO, COO, CFO and CTO on diverse matters. IS is a truly supportive environment which helps a person to attain success.
What do you enjoy the most – your job or working at IS?
The best part of my job is the ability to face new challenges every day and gain experience across all frameworks.
What do you enjoy the least about your job?
The admin and paperwork, but someone has to do it.
What have you learnt or gained over the years about personal growth?
My main learning is that if you want to continue to grow, be passionate about the execution of your ideas - it pays off.
What would be your advice to someone who wants to join IS?
You’ll never go wrong with IS. It gives you the ability to identify and pursue the career of your choice with no limitations, and the freedom to acquire knowledge in all aspects and apply these accordingly.
